Scandinavian Design With a Bohemian Twist

My first love is definitely Scandinavian design. I love the muted colors. I love the simplicity. I absolutely love how practical, functional, and streamlined the furniture is. Most of all, I think, I love the lack of clutter. A place for everything and everything in it’s place, ya know? If I’m being completely honest, I’d have to say that I don’t mind bold colors or wacky furniture as long as there isn’t any kind of clutter. So how do you marry the sleek and functional with your inner bohemian?

Start with a Blank Slate

Paint your walls white. Before you get upset with me, just hear me out. White walls allow you to see your space in it’s natural state. This is a perfect situation if you live in a rental. You can add color in the furniture and the accent pieces you choose without having to paint and then repaint.

Layer Colors

Think of those white walls as a blank canvas. The colors you choose will really pop and create visual interest without compromising the overall streamline look of Scandinavian design. Try maintaining a simple color palette to unify the space.

Use Texture

Chunky knits paired with soft fabrics and jute rugs are really the unifying elements of both Scandinavian design and Bohemian design. To get started experimenting with texture, try draping your furniture with an interesting throw. Don’t fear the sheepskin, that’s all I’m saying.

Personalize the Space

Remember that awesome wood carving you got from that roadside shop in the middle of nowhere? Or that thrift store score? That funky lamp that nobody likes but you. You can put those items on full display! Create a beautiful mantel or a well thought out occassional table. The key is to keep your bohemian items from looking cluttered. Try to keep these items within the same color family and overall theme of your space.

Scandinavian Inspired Interior—Fixer Upper Friday

Here’s the thing: I really love the whole Scandinavian design aesthetic. There’s just something so calming about a blank canvas of neutral colors. It’s the perfect opportunity to play around with different textures and to add pops of color here and there. When it all comes together, if it’s done right, you have a serene space that looks very much alive and cozy, but most of all the space is refined and understated. Very grown up, no?

Anyway, this beautiful interior is totally swoon worthy, and as I purge the useless things from my own home, I’m starting to really embrace concepts like minimalism and hygge. Check out the pics below. Isn’t this space just dreamy?!

The Best, Eclectic Scandinavian Interior You've Seen---Fixer Upper Friday

The Best, Eclectic Scandinavian Interior You’ve Seen—Fixer Upper Friday

I am a self-proclaimed minimalist guru. I absolutely despise clutter and “like so many others, I have become a slave to the Ikea nesting instinct” a la Fight Club. I think part of the appeal of the popular Scandinavian design aesthetic is the overall lack of clutter. I have fought the urge to be a hoarder all my life. I grew up poor and as a result I’ve always held on to things because that you never know when you’ll need it mentality was second nature to me. As I got older, and went through college and grad school, I bought myself a ton of brand new shiny things that as a kid my family couldn’t afford. When my brother died, I held on to a lot of his things for their sentimental value. When I looked around, I was literally wading my way through useless clutter that I had imprisoned and saddled myself down with.

The fact is, I had an awesome childhood with a loving family. Wearing hand-me-downs and growing up in run-down Brooklyn brownstones can’t erase that fact. Buying useless things and holding on to my dead brother’s belongings won’t bring me any peace or happiness and it certainly won’t bring my beautiful brother back. So for quite a few years now, I have been swept up in the awesomeness that is minimalism. It isn’t just the way it looks, it’s the peace of mind it brings.

I seriously love this ‘less is more’ design, and a tour through this eclectic Scandinavian interior by Tina Hellberg will hopefully float your boat too! Check it out!
