Yoga Essentials for Beginners and How to Use Them

Yoga Essentials for Beginners: Where to Find Them and How to Use Them

I started out doing yoga because I knew I needed to exercise. My energy levels were super low, no matter how much coffee I drank and by midday I was ready to crawl back into bed. The last straw was that my lower back and legs started to hurt more and more each time I leaned down to tie my shoes. Despite the fact that my body was functioning like I was 176 years old, I still wanted to find the lowest impact exercise I could, because lazy. That’s how I settled on yoga. I figured, I stretch and breathe every day already so yoga is totally in my wheelhouse. I was too embarrassed to actually go to a yoga class though. I chose an at-home yoga app, and in the privacy of my own living room, I began my yoga practice.

My very first full yoga routine was on New Year’s Day of last year and I’ve done a yoga routine every single day since then. I can’t begin to describe to you the difference it has made in my life. I have more energy than I’ve had in years and yoga is totally bringing my sexy back. Anyway, this last year has taught me some of the finer details of yoga—the things I wish I had known when I started that could’ve saved me from some aches and pains and other minor inconveniences. If you are just toying with the idea of starting on a healthier path, and you think yoga might be for you, here are some beginner essentials that you should totally invest in. Where applicable, I’ve also posted a link to a short video to show you how to use the particular item.

Yoga Mat

It pays off to invest in a good yoga mat. What makes a good yoga mat, you ask. One that doesn’t roll up or slip around when you’re moving from one pose into another. One that doesn’t get noticeably sticky when you start to sweat. Most of all, one that doesn’t wear out quickly and start to shed little pieces of mat all over the place. I really love Gaiam yoga mats (currently discounted here) and Manduka Prolite Mats (find them here).

Yoga Mat Towel

If you naturally run a little bit hot when you exercise,or if you plan on doing hot yoga, yoga mat towels are a must. These towels are specifically designed to wick up sweat. You can use them in place of a yoga mat or lay them right on top of your yoga mat (especially useful if you’re using the ‘bowling shoe’ yoga mats that the gym lends you).

Yoga Bolster

Yoga bolsters make it easier to get into and maintain poses that are a difficult for you. These are key when you’re trying to relax in a pose that you find a little bit strenuous. Here are some yoga poses that really benefit from the use of bolsters.

Yoga Strap

I didn’t know how great yoga straps were when I first started doing yoga, but these things are amazing. Yoga straps are so helpful when it comes to improving flexibility. Even if you’re not new to yoga, yoga straps can really help you sink deeper into a pose. Here’s how to use them.

Yoga Block

Yoga blocks are also useful for improving flexibility, but they also assist in maintaining the proper alignment in a pose. Check out this intro to yoga blocks.

***Even if you don’t pick up all of these items, you can still get moving and start your daily yoga practice. Remember: this time next year, you’ll wish you’d started today. You can do this!!!

2 Yogis You Need to Follow on Instagram

2 Yogis You NEED to Follow on Instagram

I made a promise to myself at the beginning of this year that I would do yoga, no matter what, every single day. I’m proud to report that 11 months later, I’ve actually stayed true to that promise. I can’t say that it hasn’t been difficult. I had to overcome some stumbling blocks along the way. I had a pretty bad cold earlier in the year, I traveled quite a bit, and other times I was just plain exhausted. Even still, I managed to squeeze in at least 15 minutes to an hour of yoga everyday and I’m so glad that I did!

From time to time I need a little motivation. It just takes a little bit of inspiration to spark a fire in you that burns bright and makes you not ever want to quit. I turn to Instagram in my moments of weakness (don’t judge me) and I swoon over the incredible yogis that decorate my feed. Yeah. Sometimes it’s like that for sure. I don’t know which one I love more, but Christine Hewitt and Soren Buchanan are probably my top 2/number 1 favorites.

These ladies definitely find the right balance (no pun intended) between physical fitness and showcasing the human body as an organic piece of art. I’m way into the colors and movement captured by these photos and their feeds never cease to motivate me. So if you need a little bit of inspo, just check out some of these incredible photos and join the movement. #yogaeverydamnday

Try This---Green Matcha Smoothie Bowl

Try This— Green Matcha Smoothie Bowl Better Than Ice Cream

Have you ever had green tea ice cream? If you haven’t had the pleasure of indulging, let me try to paint the picture for you. It’s all ice cream-y goodness, but with a taste that makes you feel like you’re saving the environment while pigging out. But alas, ice cream is still ice cream, and if you have fitness goals that exclude indulging in such deliciousness, even the deceptively green taste won’t help.

So I started thinking about smoothie bowls, which I’ve heard are the clean eating alternative to ice cream. I even pinned a recipe on Pinterest so I wouldn’t forget to try it. Full disclosure: I actually pinned it more for the awesome looking wooden serving bowls and cool wooden spoons featured in the picture, but I promise I seriously wanted to try the recipe too!

Anyway, that recipe soon became one of my most popular pins, and guess what? I still kept putting off making it. I was too busy using my matcha powder in spa facial recipes.

I finally tried this simple recipe (adapted from cooktoria.com) the other day, and it is absolutely amazing! It’s perfect for breakfast and snack time—the kiddos will love it as a back to school treat. It’s perfect as a post workout recovery shake—fitness goals, y’all. And best of all, it’s perfect as a dessert—a clean eating, naturally sweet indulgence that gives ice cream a run for its money. You must try this!

Green Matcha Smoothie Bowl

Green Matcha Smoothie Bowl

Ingredients

makes 1 serving

  • 1 frozen banana, sliced
  • 1 fresh kiwi, sliced
  • 1 tbsp matcha powder
  • 1/2c almond milk

Directions

  • Add all of the ingredients into your blender and process until smooth
  • Enjoy!

***NOTE: For what it’s worth, I suggest using decaf matcha powder if you’re preparing this for the kids. There’s nothing quite as exhausting as your already wired 2nd grader even more wired on matcha. Lesson learned the hard way.

The 4 Best High Impact Sports Bras for DD+ Women

The 4 Best High Impact Sports Bras for DD+ Women

Ok. Full disclosure here… I try my best to avoid high impact exercise, so the title of this post may be a little misleading. While my kiddo takes pride in workouts that leave him totally exhausted and occasionally puking, I much prefer workouts accompanied by fruit-infused water, scented candles, and the sounds of the ocean playing softly through Bose speakers. #yogaeverydamnday. That said, I haven’t actually tested these sports bras through high intensity workouts (only yoga and the totally infrequent sprint up the stairs). Still, I am pretty sure that even if you’re all about running and jumping, these bras will hold up (no pun intended). Added bonus: they’re super cute!
