The Best, Eclectic Scandinavian Interior You've Seen---Fixer Upper Friday

The Best, Eclectic Scandinavian Interior You’ve Seen—Fixer Upper Friday

I am a self-proclaimed minimalist guru. I absolutely despise clutter and “like so many others, I have become a slave to the Ikea nesting instinct” a la Fight Club. I think part of the appeal of the popular Scandinavian design aesthetic is the overall lack of clutter. I have fought the urge to be a hoarder all my life. I grew up poor and as a result I’ve always held on to things because that you never know when you’ll need it mentality was second nature to me. As I got older, and went through college and grad school, I bought myself a ton of brand new shiny things that as a kid my family couldn’t afford. When my brother died, I held on to a lot of his things for their sentimental value. When I looked around, I was literally wading my way through useless clutter that I had imprisoned and saddled myself down with.

The fact is, I had an awesome childhood with a loving family. Wearing hand-me-downs and growing up in run-down Brooklyn brownstones can’t erase that fact. Buying useless things and holding on to my dead brother’s belongings won’t bring me any peace or happiness and it certainly won’t bring my beautiful brother back. So for quite a few years now, I have been swept up in the awesomeness that is minimalism. It isn’t just the way it looks, it’s the peace of mind it brings.

I seriously love this ‘less is more’ design, and a tour through this eclectic Scandinavian interior by Tina Hellberg will hopefully float your boat too! Check it out!

Kid Friendly Seattle Renovation

Fixer Upper Friday—Kid Friendly Seattle Renovation

So I’m in the middle of binge watching Six Feet Under…again. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend that you take this weekend to veg out and remedy that (also, no worries, this post doesn’t have any spoilers).

***I don’t know how long this link will be active, but you can watch the pilot episode on HBO’s site right now without a subscription.

If you have seen it then the next thing I’m about to say will totally make sense to you: I absolutely LOVE Brenda’s apartment. It’s such a beautiful space that I always search around for similar design styles. Brenda’s apartment is kinda like my litmus test for decor. Simple and sleek but at the same time full of character and awesome architectural features. ***Which TV/Movie homes would you just love to live in? Comment below!***

Brenda's Apartment

So in my constant quest for Brenda-esque apartments, I found this really awesome space featured on Design Sponge. While it’s definitely more colorful, the space boasts the same kind of serenity and function that makes Brenda’s place so amazing. And the floors! OMG, wait until you see the floors!

This is a renovated, 100 year old home located in Seattle. Sarah and Daniel Dupuis‘ design aesthetic is swoon worthy and their cost effective DIY projects are off the charts cool. They’re even listed on Airbnb, so we might have to pack our bags! We can even watch Six Feet Under when we get there! Check out this beautiful space…

Fixer Upper Friday: Office Reveal

In a previous post I shared with you how I was rearranging/repurposing entire rooms in our fixer upper#2. The office space (formerly the master bedroom) was slowly coming along and I gave you this sneak peek.

Formerly the master bedroom, this new office space is slowly coming together.

Lots of progress has been made since this photo was taken! I’ve been bargain hunting for furniture and accent pieces and trying to figure out a pretty way to dress up those closet doors pictured above. I think I’m finally getting close to the look I’m after. Check out the pics below!

I’m all about repurposing, so when I discovered that some old bookcases I had fit perfectly into that closet I was pretty happy. I removed the mirrors from the front of the closet doors and replaced them with some decorative metal sheeting (find it here). All of the furniture was purchased second hand and cost less than $100 total! As for the wall hanging, I got it for free from an acquaintance that was in the middle of a move. If you love it as much as I do, I found a comparable piece here. My next step is to find a light fixture to hang above the desk. I’m debating between several options like this flush mount chandelier or this three pendant light fixture.

It’s still a work in progress, but I’m really falling in love!
