Design Inspiration: Southwest Modern

Southwest modern is the next swoon-worthy design style to inspire your next home makeover!

Think of it as the happy marriage of Scandi style and Bohemian style… plus a cactus… because, well, in this life, everybody needs a cactus. Scandinavian minimalism and Boho maximalism have been competing for our affection for some time now. While Scandinavian style favors simplicity and function, Bohemian style lends itself to a more eclectic, curated design approach. Southwest modern merges the two design styles in a way that makes everyone happy. Cozy, just like we saw in this Hygge centered Scandi design, without being too busy. Rustic, just like we saw in the relaxed Boho home of Julianne Hough, without being too shabby. Curated without looking too staged. Gender neutral. Oh, and did I mention the cactus?

The best part about Southwest modern is that you don’t have to overhaul your entire home to achieve the look. Playing with texture, Northwood Supply Co. (your new favorite Etsy shop), shows us how simple touches like wall art, a cool rug, and some throw pillows can transform your space. Kacy, the artist behind Northwood Supply Co. has an Instagram feed that you should totally be following. Don’t believe me? Well, Amazon’s new furniture lines are set to give both companies a run for their money. Stone & Beam, a farmhouse modern furniture line, is exclusively available through Amazon, as is the totally chic mid century modern furniture line, Rivet. Check out the stunning pictures below!

Minna Parikka’s Colorful Home is What Dreams Are Made Of

Minna Parikka, the amazing designer behind those adorable bunny sneakers you may have seen Kylie Jenner rocking, has an even more adorable home. Parikka has a space that’s uniquely her own. Instead of embracing the Scandinavian design aesthetic that dominates the homes of her native Helsinki, Parikka uses color in a way that creates the dreamiest space ever! Seriously, you guys. This woman’s style knows no limits. She stated in an interview with ElleDecor, “I wanted to create a home that looks 100% like me and that does not follow the usual Nordic home design. I wanted it to be fresh, fun, and adventurous, but still comfortable and functional,” says Parikka. “I love creating worlds that are filled with fantasy and escape from the mundane.”

There is nothing worse than a beautiful shoe that is impossible to wear or a unique home that makes every day more difficult”

One of my favorite details is the TV cabinet that is masqueraded as a piece of art. The illustration of Ziggy Stardust by the fabulous NY-London based illustrator duo Craig & Karl

The furniture is made to order: the bed and the padded leather headboard wall, fitted closets, bedside tables and the window shutters. Not to mention the pink carpet or even the ceiling. The inspiration for the bedroom came from the totally pink Sketch restaurant in London.

I love a sauna. It is the best way to relax after a long flight or day at work. It is common to have one in Finnish houses. It is the luxury of everyday life”
