First off I should admit that I haven’t used store bought shampoo in over a year, so what I’m about to say is based on a lot of experience. IT IS TIME TO DITCH YOUR SHAMPOO! Seriously. It’s not as tall an order as it sounds and the benefits are immediate and long lasting.
I’ve been making the switch to an all natural beauty routine for quite a while now. I started a new skin care routine using raw honey and soon added apple cider vinegar toner and apple cider vinegar exfoliant into my daily regimen. Essential oils found their way into the rotation and now I can honestly say, I’m never turning back.
Ditching commercial shampoo was naturally the next step. Everybody knows the feeling of having ‘clean’ hair that somehow still feels heavy after it dries… Or maybe even that moment when you scratch your head and half of your scalp is under your finger nails. Sigh. I found myself washing my hair twice a day not knowing that the store bought shampoo I was using was actually the main culprit behind my hair washing woes.
A little over a year ago, I started washing my hair with an apple cider vinegar and water solution. It took a little getting used to because it doesn’t lather up the way commercial shampoo does. I use this recipe, but honestly you can just eyeball it until you find a ratio that suits your hair. I was amazed at how clean my hair was after just one application! Only setback was the smell. Though it was a faint smell, the apple cider vinegar certainly managed to leave its mark. Not cool.
So now along with the ACV rinse, I also use a sweet smelling, DIY herbal shampoo. With just 3 ingredients (water, herbs, and pure castile soap), you can Make Your Own Customized Herbal Shampoo.
If you want to take the guess work out of picking the right combination of herbs, herbal blends categorized by hair type, are available for purchase here. These blends can be added to either your apple cider vinegar rinse alone, or your DIY herbal shampoo, or both!
