DIY Holiday Eggnog Hair Mask

So I went to the grocery store yesterday and honestly I was more than a little excited to see that eggnog is back on the shelves. Of all the seasonal products, eggnog is probably  my favorite. I mean, nothing beats an eggnog cocktail. Amiright?!! I’ve even made eggnog french toast which is as close to divinity as we’re gonna get in this life. As with any food that I love, it’s only a matter of time before I use it in a diy beauty treatment.

My hair has been suffering a little bit lately. I’m going to just go ahead and blame it on the weather getting colder. Impending Winter blues, y’all. Anyway, my hair has been pretty dry lately, and I’m noticing a fair share of split ends. No bueno. So last night, I made this hair remedy that I’m sure you’re gonna go gaga for. Seriously, the protein benefits of egg and the sweet smell of the holidays all in one easy to make hair treatment. What’s not to love?!

Holiday Eggnog Hair Mask

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp eggnog
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional, be aware that cinnamon has a lightening effect on the hair)
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 egg white

Directions

  • Add all ingredients into a glass jar
  • mix well
  • wash your hair normally, then work the mixture through damp hair
  • cover with a towel or shower cap
  • allow the mixture to penetrate your hair for about 20 minutes
  • rinse hair thoroughly with warm water

The egg in this hair mask provides a much needed boost of protein for dry hair, while the honey and coconut oil help to moisturize and add shine to dull hair. If youfind that the mixture is a little too thin, just add more honey or nutmeg to thicken it up a bit.

Rejuvenating Grape Face Mask

Consider the humble grape. At this point, this little fruit – or cluster of fruits – may feel a bit… played out. After all, grapes have a habit of showing up all over the place: as raisins, jelly, jam, good puns, wine. Like apples, grapes are one of those produce items we’ve grown so used to, our eyes often skim right over them at the market, opting instead for something more exotic. But before you pass over that purple or light green cluster yet again, take another look. The simple grapes sitting before you come from a long and complicated history, with their first domestication dating as far back as 8,000 years ago. What’s more, they could be the key to gorgeous, youthful looking skin. Intrigued? Read on.

What are grapes?

Thought to have been originally cultivated in the Middle East over 8,000 years ago, grapes are botanically a berry and have been used as food and to make wine for nearly equal amounts of time. The yeast that occurs naturally on the skin of the grapes is what causes the fruit to turn alcoholic, which eventually led to the discovery of turning grapes to wine. Now, the majority of grapes worldwide are destined to be made into wine, though a small percentage is reserved for those of us who still like to eat them straight from the vine.

What are the benefits of grapes?

We’ve all heard of the heart-healthy benefits of red wine, but did you know the same benefits could be reaped by simply eating dark red grapes? Packed with antioxidant-rich polyphenols like resveratrol, grapes — specifically the skin of dark red and purple grapes — could benefit heart and skin health. The flavonoid quercetin present in the skin of dark red grapes has been found to potentially reduce LDL cholesterol and grape’s high polyphenol content has been shown to possibly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The resveratrol found in grapes could also boost brain power, helping to increase blood flow to the brain and neutralize free radicals. Grapes are also a rich source of skin-friendly alpha hydroxy acids, which boost cellular turnover and help heal damage caused by the sun, while collagen-promoting anthocyanins found in the skin of grapes could reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Takeaway: Don’t peel your grapes. One more takeaway? Rich in insoluble fiber, grapes could aid in digestion and tonify the digestive tract, helping your digestion work more efficiently.

Not only can you enjoy the magnificent cleansing properties of grapes internally, you can also whip up an amazing face mask to have your skin Autumn ready in no time! If you’ve been following me, you know that I’ve already used wine to make an incredibly, restorative face mask. This recipe uses fresh grapes instead and dare I say, I love this one even more than my red wine mask. Check it out!

Well, if you don’t mind me bragging, I fancy myself quite the natural skin care guru myself. Spa Oasis: The 4 Best Shower Plants To Add to Your Bathroom + A Nifty Idea for the Commitment-Phobic Plant Lover

This summer I went to Stockholm and got to see Scandinavian design first hand. Ikea definitely rules the city, but one thing that I hadn’t really noticed before my visit was this new trend that’s sweeping across the internet: shower plants. I stayed at this cute little air bnb and the bathroom was full of potted plants. I absolutely loved it. The shower stall had hanging plants creeping down the side of the wall and the tub was adorned with beautiful potted plants. It made for the most relaxing spa shower I’ve had in a long time.

As soon as I got back to the states, I knew I just had to add a little green to my shower. I did some investigating and soon discovered that Swedes might be on to something here. Not only are potted plants in the bathroom totally beautiful, but they also serve the function of purifying the air of bacteria and humidity. Perfect for a bathroom! It’s no secret how much I love houseplants. Even though I have the worst luck in keeping plants alive, I’ve found some houseplants that totally thrive even when they are in the care of an herbicidal maniac like me. Finding houseplants for your shower is no different. These plants are totally well suited for a bathroom’s humid environment and are all seriously low maintenance. Check it out!

Air Plants

These amazing little guys are really making the rounds on Pinterest lately. Practically impossible to kill, they add a touch of elegance without all of the fuss. They don’t need soil and when stored in a bathroom, they get most of their water from the air. Just perfect!

Ferns

An oldie, but goodie. Ferns never lose their charm. They require little maintenance and are super prolific. they don’t need direct sunlight and your shower will feel like a rainforest. These look amazing on a vanity, on the lip of a tub, or on a shelf above the toilet.

Spider Plants

Spider plants serve double duty by adding a beautiful touch of low maintenance green to your loo, while at the same time purifying the air. They don’t need much light and they really do well in the humid environment provided by a bathroom.

Eternity Plant

So aptly named, the eternity plant is virtually impossible to kill. Seriously, I tried. I am horrible at taking care of plants, but this one here doesn’t mind the fact that I, ahem, never water it, never talk to it (aren’t you supposed to talk to plants?), and have only indirect sunlight in my bathroom. Forget about marriage, this guy will never give up on his relationship with you.

Nifty Idea: Bath Bouquets

Ok. So what if you’re not willing to even attempt to care for a plant, no matter how low maintenance it is? I totally understand. I have a guest bathroom that I seriously never use. I only go in there to wipe it down from time to time when I know I’m going to have company. Not an ideal place for indoor plants that rely, even just a little bit, on human interaction.

For that bathroom, I like to put together a bouquet of eucalyptus, mint, lavender, rosemary, or lemongrass stems that i tie up with natural twine (find it here) and hang from the shower curtain. These ‘bouquets’ last for weeks and release the most beautiful fragrances when in an enclosed space. When and if you do use the shower, the bouquet reacts to the steam and creates an amazing aromatherapy shower. Such a cool little idea! You can avoid commitment, but still enjoy the benefits of bringing the outside in!
