Interior Design Trends to Look for in 2017

Interior Design Trends to Look for in 2017— Fixer Upper Friday

There’s no doubt that interior design trends over the past couple of years have been dominated by Scandinavian and minimalist aesthetics. The Scandinavian aesthetic has made grays and whites the go to color for everything from walls to textiles to tableware. While the minimalist aesthetic has favored function over form and furniture choices have definitely reflected that sentiment. Clean lines and hidden storage solutions have certainly been the most popular trends.

2017 is ushering in a thirst for color and texture and the hot new trends will embrace everything from floral prints to rich jewel tones and bold colors. The Scandinavian and minimalist design design trend will still dominate, but the name of the game this year is to incorporate bolder colors and mixed textures, in order to give homes a much more curated look.

If you find yourself cringing at the thought of floral wallpaper plastered on your crisp and clean living room walls, don’t be too alarmed. There are much more subtle ways to stay on trend with this year’s must have textures and colors. Rule of thumb: use small items to add that pop of color or that depth of texture then work your way up!

Textures

Raw, natural materials are set to make a big splash. While 2016 gave us shiny finishes like rose gold and copper, this year we’ll see more terracotta, cork, and even volcanic stone. Also, look out for velvet or floral accents like throw pillows and fabrics. Or take the plunge and try to get a hold of a vintage velvet couch! Thrift store time!!!

Colors

Earthy colors like powdery pink, sand, ochre, cinnamon, rust, and olive green will all make their mark this year. Deep Jewel tones will also appear, adding a romantic touch to interior spaces. Also, look for watercolors and the use of artwork to anchor spaces in unexpected ways like floor coverings.

The Best, Eclectic Scandinavian Interior You’ve Seen—Fixer Upper Friday

I am a self-proclaimed minimalist guru. I absolutely despise clutter and “like so many others, I have become a slave to the Ikea nesting instinct” a la Fight Club. I think part of the appeal of the popular Scandinavian design aesthetic is the overall lack of clutter. I have fought the urge to be a hoarder all my life. I grew up poor and as a result I’ve always held on to things because that you never know when you’ll need it mentality was second nature to me. As I got older, and went through college and grad school, I bought myself a ton of brand new shiny things that as a kid my family couldn’t afford. When my brother died, I held on to a lot of his things for their sentimental value. When I looked around, I was literally wading my way through useless clutter that I had imprisoned and saddled myself down with.

The fact is, I had an awesome childhood with a loving family. Wearing hand-me-downs and growing up in run-down Brooklyn brownstones can’t erase that fact. Buying useless things and holding on to my dead brother’s belongings won’t bring me any peace or happiness and it certainly won’t bring my beautiful brother back. So for quite a few years now, I have been swept up in the awesomeness that is minimalism. It isn’t just the way it looks, it’s the peace of mind it brings.

I seriously love this ‘less is more’ design, and a tour through this eclectic Scandinavian interior by Tina Hellberg will hopefully float your boat too! Check it out!

Trend Alert---Kilim Woven Rugs and Accessories

Trend Alert—Kilim Woven Rugs and Accessories

I’m not a bold colors kinda gal. When it comes to fashion I stick to blacks and grays. Home decor is no different. I love the muted colors of Scandinavian design and I absolutely love minimalism. This has become a constant source of contention between my sister and I, as I renovate our family’s two fixer uppers. She loves bold colors and prints and we argue all the time about paint choices and accessories. Enter the awesomeness that is kilim.

Trend Alert---Killim Woven Rug and Accessories

Kilim is a type of Turkish/Persian, woven rug that boasts some pretty interesting patterns and colors. It’s making the rounds in Western homes thanks to shops like World Market and Urban Outfitters, and I think it’s just the perfect compromise between the muted design choices I make and the totally bold choices my sister loves. Because of its increasing popularity, you can find kilim print on everything from rugs to throw pillows. Check it out!

Fixer Upper Friday—Infographics That’ll Help You Sound Like a Boss Interior Designer

One thing I’ve learned over the course of tackling these renovations on my own is that if you sound like you know what you’re talking about, people tend to take you more seriously. I go to the hardware store, and I hear things like, “why isn’t your boyfriend renovating?,” or “sweetheart, you better call in a professional before you mess up so bad you need a professional.” Mind you, those are the things I hear after these dudes are done ignoring me by talking to men that came into the store way after I got there. Sigh. The last thing I want do in situations like that is to ask a question that comes off as ‘silly’.

The Ivy League Master’s degree side of me always does a lot of research. I can’t help it. I study a subject until I can teach it, or at the very least be able to use the proper terminology. I’m just programmed that way. Long story short, I go into a hardware store now, and I don’t have to ask for help because I know exactly what I’m there to get. Just tell me which aisle has the 3/8″ compression T-fitting, sir, and I’ll be on my way… and don’t call me sweetheart. Being able to do that, well, It’s liberating.

Anyway, I’ve come to a point in some of these projects where I’m done fixing structural things and I can finally start on the fun stuff like furnishings and decor. I’ve found myself struggling to describe what it is I’m looking for. Terms like Windsor Back or Cabriole Legs have me totally confused. So I found this amazing compilation of pin-worthy infographics that give names to all the faces of those coveted pieces of furniture and trendy design styles we all know and love. There are even tips on everything from picking paint colors to arranging a bookcase like a pro. Check these out!

Fixer Upper Friday—Brooklyn Heights Townhouse Asking $11M

Brooklyn Promenade

Brooklyn Promenade at Night

Literally just a few blocks from the Brooklyn Promenade (with that view!!!), a 4,400-square-foot, five-bedroom townhouse at 265 Hicks Street hit the market, asking $10.75 million. That asking price puts it among the ranks of the most expensive homes currently for sale in Brooklyn.

The five-story home was originally built in the 19th century, but recently underwent a top-to-bottom renovation and, per the brokerspeak, has been transformed into a “turnkey masterpiece.” (And yes, there’s an elevator connecting those floors.) There’s an abundance of outdoor space, including a back garden, a fifth-floor balcony (connected to a sun room, because of course), and a private roof deck.

The revamp gave the home a modern feel while retaining many of its original details, including the facade, a bay window on the parlor level, and a grand staircase with a lovely wood banister. Other features include a third-floor lounge (which could be used as a media room, probably); a huge master suite with office and “sitting room”; and a chef’s kitchen that comes with high-end appliances.

There’s also a whole other one-bedroom apartment on the garden level that could be rented out, or simply used as a guest suite.

Sigh. This place is worth every penny! See for yourself. I’m totally drooling over this. It’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid to live in that section of Brooklyn Heights! Check out the pics below!
