4 Tropical Beauty Recipes to Try This Spring

Harness the power of tropical fruit and ocean water with these easy beauty recipes! Perfect for reawakening your springtime and summer beauty routine.

  BRIGHTENING PAPAYA FACE MASK

Packed with antioxidants, vitamin-C and natural fruit enzymes, the papaya is a staple ingredient in many Australians beauty routines. Rich in natural AHA’s (alpha hydroxy acids), papaya helps to break down dead skin cells and even out skin tone and texture. Blended with anti-inflammatory oatmeal, yogurt and honey, this mask will help to reveal a refreshed, glowing complexion. For those with sensitive skin we recommend using this mask every two weeks.

INGREDIENTS

¼ ripe papaya (Use the rest for this skin-loving tropical smoothie recipe!)
3 heaped tbsp Greek yogurt
2 tbsp finely ground rolled oats
2 tbsp honey

METHOD

  • STEP 1

Remove the skin and seeds of the papaya and slice the flesh into cubes.

  • STEP 2

Using a food processor, combine all of the ingredients.

  • STEP 3

Apply a thick layer of the mask to the face and rinse off after 30 minutes for bright, glowing skin.

      COCONUT COFFEE BODY SCRUB

This coconut coffee scrub is a great, chemical-free way to exfoliate and revitalize tired skin. Massaging the coffee grounds into the skin helps to stimulate the circulation and reduce the appearance of cellulite. Rich in antioxidants, the coffee grounds help to increase collagen production while their high caffeine content also help to stimulate blood cells, toning and tightening the skin. Blended with hydrating coconut oil, this scrub will leave you feeling (and smelling) amazing.

    INGREDIENTS

    1 cup of raw sugar
    ½ cup of coconut oil
    2 tablespoons desiccated coconut
    2–3 tablespoons cocoa
    2 tablespoons ground coffee

    METHOD

    • STEP 1

Submerge a small bowl of coconut oil in boiling water to soften and allow it to cool but not solidify.

    • STEP 2

Combine all the ingredients and store in an airtight container or mason jar.

    • STEP 3

Use 2-3 times a week for soft, silky skin.

       LAVENDER BATH SALTS

The benefits of bathing in Epsom salt has been known for centuries. Rich in magnesium, a mineral we are often lacking, bathing in the salts helps to flush the body of environmental pollutants, ease joint pain and reduce inflammation. Blended with either lavender or rose essential oil, this healing soak is the perfect way to unwind after a long day.

      INGREDIENTS

      1 cup Himalayan pink salt
      1/2 cup Epsom salts
      1/2 cup baking soda
10 drops rose or lavender essential oil

      METHOD

      • STEP 1

Combine the ingredients in a bowl and mix thoroughly.

      • STEP 2

Store in an airtight container or mason jar to preserve the fragrance of the lavender.

      • STEP 3

To use, add two tablespoons of the soak to a warm bath and enjoy.

          SEA SALT HAIR SPRAY

Many hair care brands have worked to develop products that mimic the salty properties of the sea. Using a blend of sea salt, nourishing coconut oil and conditioning aloe vera, this recipe is sure to create waves, no beach necessary.

        INGREDIENTS

        1 cup warm water
        1 Tbsp sea salt
        1 tsp Epsom salt
        1 Tbsp organic coconut oil
        1 Tbsp aloe vera gel
        5 drops essential oil, optional

        METHOD

        • STEP 1

Pour the warm water into an empty spray bottle and combine ingredients.

        • STEP 2

Put the cap on the bottle and shake until the sea salt and Epsom salts are dissolved.

        • STEP 3

To use, spray on damp hair and towel scrunch until dry

Rejuvenating Grape Face Mask

Consider the humble grape. At this point, this little fruit – or cluster of fruits – may feel a bit… played out. After all, grapes have a habit of showing up all over the place: as raisins, jelly, jam, good puns, wine. Like apples, grapes are one of those produce items we’ve grown so used to, our eyes often skim right over them at the market, opting instead for something more exotic. But before you pass over that purple or light green cluster yet again, take another look. The simple grapes sitting before you come from a long and complicated history, with their first domestication dating as far back as 8,000 years ago. What’s more, they could be the key to gorgeous, youthful looking skin. Intrigued? Read on.

What are grapes?

Thought to have been originally cultivated in the Middle East over 8,000 years ago, grapes are botanically a berry and have been used as food and to make wine for nearly equal amounts of time. The yeast that occurs naturally on the skin of the grapes is what causes the fruit to turn alcoholic, which eventually led to the discovery of turning grapes to wine. Now, the majority of grapes worldwide are destined to be made into wine, though a small percentage is reserved for those of us who still like to eat them straight from the vine.

What are the benefits of grapes?

We’ve all heard of the heart-healthy benefits of red wine, but did you know the same benefits could be reaped by simply eating dark red grapes? Packed with antioxidant-rich polyphenols like resveratrol, grapes — specifically the skin of dark red and purple grapes — could benefit heart and skin health. The flavonoid quercetin present in the skin of dark red grapes has been found to potentially reduce LDL cholesterol and grape’s high polyphenol content has been shown to possibly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The resveratrol found in grapes could also boost brain power, helping to increase blood flow to the brain and neutralize free radicals. Grapes are also a rich source of skin-friendly alpha hydroxy acids, which boost cellular turnover and help heal damage caused by the sun, while collagen-promoting anthocyanins found in the skin of grapes could reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Takeaway: Don’t peel your grapes. One more takeaway? Rich in insoluble fiber, grapes could aid in digestion and tonify the digestive tract, helping your digestion work more efficiently.

Not only can you enjoy the magnificent cleansing properties of grapes internally, you can also whip up an amazing face mask to have your skin Autumn ready in no time! If you’ve been following me, you know that I’ve already used wine to make an incredibly, restorative face mask. This recipe uses fresh grapes instead and dare I say, I love this one even more than my red wine mask. Check it out!

The Perfect Luggage for the Neurotic Neat-Freak in All of Us

This July I’m heading overseas for a European vacation. It’ll be the first time in a long time that I’m traveling internationally for an extended period of time. I’ll be hanging out in Scandinavia and England for several weeks. As excited as I am for the trip, I think I’m more excited about the opportunity to pack my luggage. Hear me out. For me, packing luggage represents the opportunity to appease all of the angry, neurotic, neat-freak, minimalist voices in my head. There is almost nothing quite as satisfying as packing everything you could possibly need into a nifty carry on.

Recently, I came across Eagle Creek luggage, and I’ve been swooning ever since. This luggage is the truth, y’all. I mean, every square inch of these bags are made to maximize function and keep you organized. I’m in no way affiliated with this company, I’m just kind of a nerd when it comes to travel. I write lists. I double check those lists. I even do ‘dry runs’ to make sure my list is top notch by packing and unpacking while I’m still at home.

I’m super stoked I found Eagle Creek bags ahead of this summer trip I’m taking. They have different collections to choose from, so there’s something for everybody. From the international traveler like me, to the mom that has to pack for all the kids, to the business traveler, even to the outdoor enthusiast, these bags are everything. Dude, I’m really geeking out over this luggage. I think you will too, just check out this video!

Yoga Essentials for Beginners and How to Use Them

Yoga Essentials for Beginners: Where to Find Them and How to Use Them

I started out doing yoga because I knew I needed to exercise. My energy levels were super low, no matter how much coffee I drank and by midday I was ready to crawl back into bed. The last straw was that my lower back and legs started to hurt more and more each time I leaned down to tie my shoes. Despite the fact that my body was functioning like I was 176 years old, I still wanted to find the lowest impact exercise I could, because lazy. That’s how I settled on yoga. I figured, I stretch and breathe every day already so yoga is totally in my wheelhouse. I was too embarrassed to actually go to a yoga class though. I chose an at-home yoga app, and in the privacy of my own living room, I began my yoga practice.

My very first full yoga routine was on New Year’s Day of last year and I’ve done a yoga routine every single day since then. I can’t begin to describe to you the difference it has made in my life. I have more energy than I’ve had in years and yoga is totally bringing my sexy back. Anyway, this last year has taught me some of the finer details of yoga—the things I wish I had known when I started that could’ve saved me from some aches and pains and other minor inconveniences. If you are just toying with the idea of starting on a healthier path, and you think yoga might be for you, here are some beginner essentials that you should totally invest in. Where applicable, I’ve also posted a link to a short video to show you how to use the particular item.

Yoga Mat

It pays off to invest in a good yoga mat. What makes a good yoga mat, you ask. One that doesn’t roll up or slip around when you’re moving from one pose into another. One that doesn’t get noticeably sticky when you start to sweat. Most of all, one that doesn’t wear out quickly and start to shed little pieces of mat all over the place. I really love Gaiam yoga mats (currently discounted here) and Manduka Prolite Mats (find them here).

Yoga Mat Towel

If you naturally run a little bit hot when you exercise,or if you plan on doing hot yoga, yoga mat towels are a must. These towels are specifically designed to wick up sweat. You can use them in place of a yoga mat or lay them right on top of your yoga mat (especially useful if you’re using the ‘bowling shoe’ yoga mats that the gym lends you).

Yoga Bolster

Yoga bolsters make it easier to get into and maintain poses that are a difficult for you. These are key when you’re trying to relax in a pose that you find a little bit strenuous. Here are some yoga poses that really benefit from the use of bolsters.

Yoga Strap

I didn’t know how great yoga straps were when I first started doing yoga, but these things are amazing. Yoga straps are so helpful when it comes to improving flexibility. Even if you’re not new to yoga, yoga straps can really help you sink deeper into a pose. Here’s how to use them.

Yoga Block

Yoga blocks are also useful for improving flexibility, but they also assist in maintaining the proper alignment in a pose. Check out this intro to yoga blocks.

***Even if you don’t pick up all of these items, you can still get moving and start your daily yoga practice. Remember: this time next year, you’ll wish you’d started today. You can do this!!!
